Here, the word ”sustaining” means to provide enough of what somebody or something needs in order to live or exist.
So for a teacher to provide enough of what her/his pupil needs in order to be a genius, the tips below should be his/her daily meal;
- Know the subject to teach by advance planning and preparations:
- Use the dictionary,
- Know the key words and EXPLAIN them,
- Know the synonyms and antonyms of some words in the topic,
- Know their usage and applications to real life,
- Transcriptions and parts of the speech they belong to.
- Be friendly: A teacher is more like an entertainer, because she must capture, hold and sustain the interest of the learner before she can communicate effectively.
- Create A Conducive Learning Environment: Don’t just sit all the time, move around, see and check what they are doing, vary the class sitting arrangement for different topics or subjects. They could learn outside the classroom; for nursery- do math sitting, discuss and play.
- Seek To Discover The Learning Style Of Each Child: Use aids like pictures, drawings, videos, paintings, role play etc. If a child can’t learn the way we teach, we do with plays.
- Avoid Abstract Teaching: Repeat for emphasis, relate the concept of your teaching to their needs, relate the content to their lives.
- Use Clear Teaching Aids And Instructional Materials: Children learn better when what they are thought are of real life and practical. Because of their nature as children; they absorb best through experiencing, as their brains are not yet well developed. Therefore the use of clear teaching aids and instructional materials bring learning close to real life experiences which children can better absorb.
- Make Your Presentation To Be Learner Centered, And Interest Arousing: Make your teaching as a teacher to be interest arousing because one learns what you teach him when you awaken interest of the subject within him. Also use what the child can easily grasp while teaching him.
- Don’t Teach To Know, But Teach To Understand: Don’t teach the children merely to know but to really understand, because knowledge not applied is useless and no knowledge for the child, for he can’t use it for any future use and will easily forget it.
- Evidence Of Learning Is In An Improved Behavior: If there is no improvement in the behavior of your children, this means that the knowledge given to them is no real knowledge because it was not applied. And the purpose of learning is to get improvement in character and in learning. Pseudo knowledge doesn’t affect ones character and as such is useless for the individual. So a teacher while giving out any knowledge or teaching his pupils; should relate it to how one can achieve success with the knowledge being given to him; through having good character to project his talent. It is a known fact that many with great talents don’t do well in life as a result of bad character and approach to real life. Only in this way can there be evidence of attainment of real knowledge and understanding.
- Keep Your Thoughts Positive Because Your Thoughts Become Your Words: It takes for positive statements from a teacher to offset the effects of one negative statement to a child; because to arrive at this, one’s thoughts must be pure and positive, for what we think eventually becomes what we say and do.
- Direct Them In The Area Of Their Intelligence: Every child is a genius in a particular area. The Child is definitely interested and committed.
- Practice Self Care: Moderate sleep, nice food, learn more, exercise, make good friends and visit places, love yourself, believe you can do all things possible. See yourself as a worthy person.
- Avoid Inferiority Complex/Don’t Compare Yourself With Somebody: Don’t compare yourself with someone else because people are gifted in diverse ways. And avoid inferiority complex but be confident in what you can do.
- Focus on What Brings Good News To You: This implies that we should be positive in life and not being negative; only welcoming bad news which weakens our strength of action.
- Learn From Your Mistakes: A wise person always learns from his mistakes and advance further always. For the main purpose of life is to mature through experiencing. And this maturity can only come when we learn from our mistakes in life. In the bid to teach the children, a teacher learns anew after using methods that couldn’t work.
- Admit, If Needed: If there is something too difficult for you, meet another teacher to clear you on that because if you didn’t, it will definitely affect the child. Always be down to earth and humble because no one knows all. Always bear in mind that these children are like seeds being planted by we, the teachers, if we didn’t water them very well, they wouldn’t bear good fruits and we will be accounted for not watering them well because anything we sow, we must reap.
